THE PHRASES
Say the whole line aloud.
Slovak first. Meaning second. Repeat without looking when you can.
- 01Mám tridsať rokov.I am thirty years old.Slovak uses ‘I have’, not Som tridsať.
- 02Je mi zima.I am cold.This describes how you feel.
- 03Páči sa mi Bratislava.I like Bratislava.The thing liked is the grammatical subject.
- 04Chutí mi táto polievka.I like the taste of this soup.
- 05Idem domov.I am going home.Movement toward home.
- 06Som doma.I am at home.Location, not movement.
- 07Učím sa po slovensky.I am learning Slovak.
- 08Hovorím trochu po slovensky.I speak a little Slovak.
- 09Čakám na autobus.I am waiting for the bus.Čakať uses na.
- 10Počúvam hudbu.I listen to music.No direct equivalent of English ‘to’ is needed here.
